Getting clean transcripts from phone recordings

  • Put the phone close to whoever is speaking and on a soft surface. That cuts table knocks and echo, which cause more errors than the phone's microphone does.
  • Voice Memos saves compact M4A files in its default compressed quality, so even an hour-long recording uploads quickly over mobile data.
  • Long lectures and meetings are fine. You're charged by the recording's length, and files can be up to 2 GB.
  • Recording other people? Check the consent rules where you are, since some places require everyone's permission.
